One of our favorite independent games of Indiecade last year, Thumper finally has a release date! Developer Drool alongside Playstation blog announced the game would be releasing at the same time as Playstation VR on October 13th.
Thumper, developed by duo and alumni of Harmonix Marc Flury and Brian Gibson, is a fast paced “Rhythm Hell” speed game as a metallic space beetle of some kind. It’s unique in the sense that rather than developing the music first and tailoring the game mechanics to it like most music games, it’s created the other way around. To quote Marc Flury’s posting on the Playstation Blog:
“Of course, audio is also an essential part of Thumper. Brian composed the music using a unique “gameplay first” technique. Most rhythm games take pre-composed songs and fit gameplay around them. For Thumper, we first developed the mechanics and levels and Brian used them to create an integrated sound experience that maximizes impact. You don’t play the music in Thumper, you survive it.”
It was only recently announced that Thumper would also be a Playstation VR compatible game much to everyone’s surprise and delight. Having played the game a few times at Indiecade and Playstation Experience 2015, I can attest to it being the type of game to lend itself well to VR. I didn’t get to try it out at E3 where it was available but you can bet we’ll be lining up to get a PS VR once it arrives in a few months.
To celebrate the release of the game, Drool and Iam8bit have partnered up to create another awesome vinyl soundtrack release. Those who purchase the soundtrack will also receive the digital download of the game as well as a digital version of the soundtrack. Retailing only for $45 (chill out, you’re getting the vinyl and the game ;)). It’s one of those releases where the music is what makes the game. Or as Marc likes to put it “You don’t play the music in Thumper – you survive it”.
What are your thoughts on Thumper? Are you excited to play it, excited for VR? Let us know!
