A few months ago we were fortunate enough to attend Siggraph, the computer animation expo in Los Angeles California and sat in on many panels during our stay.
One of the most exciting ones were that of one of the premiere stop motion animation production houses in the world, Laika. You may remember them from James and the Giant Peach, Coraline, ParaNorman and most recently the Box Trolls. During their panel they explained their history and how their process has evolved, using a combination of traditional stop motion techniques with digital ones. As with every project something new is learned, many ideas were applied to their forthcoming project. Thing was they couldn’t show anything at all other than it was called, “Kubo and the Two Strings”.
Well the trailer for it is finally here and it looks pretty amazing. Hyper stylized with a mix of papercraft/origami and marionette doll like aesthetics, Kubo seems to be another hit for the studio from Portland.
Kubo and the Two Strings takes place in a mystical ancient Japan, where supernatural forces are out to get Kubo. Voiced by a steller cast of Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara and Matthew McConaughey and is slated for release in August of 2016.
What do you think of Laika’s next film? We’re definitely psyched for it.
